Fibre laser engraving — metal, glass & slate

Fibre lasers do what CO₂ lasers can't: mark and engrave metal. The beam interacts with the metal surface itself, leaving a permanent change in the substrate — not a coating, not a print, not an etch. That's why fibre-marked jewellery, knives and industrial parts survive years of cleaning, wear and weather.

We run a fibre laser station in our Leith workshop, alongside our CO₂ cutter and MOPA marker. We engrave metal, glass and slate for designers, distilleries, jewellers, fabricators and industrial clients.

What fibre engraving is good for

  • Brand plaques and signage on metal
  • Awards and corporate-gift personalisation
  • Knife blades, watch backs, pen barrels
  • Distillery and brewery bottle marks
  • Slate coasters, drink-mats, address plaques
  • Glass etching — frosted or photographic-style
  • Architectural hardware and brackets

Materials and what the mark looks like

  • Stainless steel — annealed dark mark, polished bright mark, or deep engrave. See our stainless page.
  • Anodised aluminium — colour-removed white-on-colour mark. See our anodised page.
  • Brass and copper — soft engrave, takes infill paint cleanly
  • Mild steel — dark oxide mark or deep engrave
  • Titanium — strong contrast, accepts MOPA colour
  • Glass — frosted appearance, good for logos and addresses
  • Slate — high contrast off the dark surface, very durable outdoors

Annealing vs. engraving

Two different marks come off the same machine:

  • Annealed mark — heat-changes the surface to a dark grey or black without removing material. Smooth to touch, food-safe, ideal for medical and culinary parts.
  • Engraved mark — physically removes a small amount of metal. Tactile, deeper contrast, takes paint infill. Best for industrial and outdoor pieces.

Capability

  • Bed area: 175x175 mm
  • Power: 100 W
  • Resolution: 0.05 mm minimum line; smaller text down to about 1 mm tall stays legible
  • Rotary attachment for cylindrical parts (bottles, pens, mugs)
  • Files: SVG, AI, DXF, PDF, EPS

What we don't engrave on the fibre

Wood, acrylic, leather, paper — all go on our CO₂ laser instead. See CO₂ laser cutting.
