Prop making & large-scale fabrication in Edinburgh
Some jobs don't fit through a normal workshop door. A ten-foot version of a product for a shop window. A set of backdrops that has to tour and come back in one piece. A machine that needs to look a hundred years old and work on cue. Cobblestone Creative builds that kind of thing from our 1,400 sqft workshop in Leith, for productions, brands and venues across Edinburgh and Scotland.
We're a fabrication workshop first — lasers, 3D printers, a CNC and a full woodshop under one roof, and a crew that installs what it built. That's why the awkward jobs end up here. Work that would otherwise need a prop maker, a joiner, a signmaker and a sculptor turns into one conversation and one quote.
What we make
- Large-scale and oversized props — giant objects, sculptural builds and hero pieces for stage, screen, windows and activations.
- Stage backdrops and scenic build — backdrops, cloths, flats and cycloramas built to hang, tour and strike.
- Unusual and one-off projects — kinetic pieces, installations, replicas and briefs other workshops have already turned down.
- Set design fabrication and scenic carpentry — flats, platforms and period detailing for theatre, film and TV.
- Event fabrication and build crew — festival, activation and installation work with our own crew on site.
Scale, honestly
Big is mostly a logistics problem, not a making problem. We design large pieces to come apart — sectional builds, hidden joins, keyed frames — so they leave the workshop, get through the venue door and go back together in the right order. If it has to tour, that thinking goes in at the first sketch rather than after the first crack.
Materials we build in
- Timber, ply and MDF — the backbone of most large builds
- Carved and coated foam where weight is the constraint
- Steel and aluminium framing where the structure has to carry
- Laser-cut and 3D-printed detail — precise, repeatable, fast
- Paint, texture and scenic finishing to suit the light it lives under
How a project runs
- Send the brief — script, storyboard, mood board, or a sketch on the back of something.
- We come back inside 48 hours with an approach and a costed build estimate.
- We prototype the difficult part before the budget is committed to it.
- We build in the workshop, with progress photos as it goes.
- We deliver and install with our own crew — and strike it afterwards if you need that too.
Who we build for
- Theatre companies and producers, small to mid-scale
- Film, TV and commercial productions
- Brands and agencies running activations, shoots and window displays
- Museums, galleries and visitor attractions
- Festivals, venues and event organisers
